Gao Fenghan, a famous left-handed calligrapher and painter in the Qing Dynasty of China, was one of the outstanding figures among the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou". His calligraphy and paintings were renowned both at home and abroad for their elegance, simplicity and uniqueness, and he was even more famous in the art world for his extraordinary talent in using his left hand.
The Gao Fenghan Memorial Hall is located in the north of Nan Sanlihe Village, Jiaozhou, his hometown. It covers an area of about 16 mu, with a construction area of 1,960 square meters. It consists of two main parts: the former residence and the attached facilities. The former residence part includes the Shi'ao Hall, the Chunchao Hall, the Beitang Hall, the Zhuxi Pavilion, the Nanzhai Hall, the Nanzhai Pond and so on, allowing visitors to learn about Gao's family background and life story. The attached facilities part has six exhibition halls, one spring pavilion and the Gao Fenghan Cemetery. The first exhibition hall displays a picture biography introducing Gao's life. The second and third exhibition halls introduce Gao's artistic achievements as well as his works of poetry, calligraphy, painting, seal carving and inkstones. The fourth, fifth and sixth exhibition halls take turns to exhibit the calligraphy and painting works inscribed for the memorial hall by famous people and scholars at home and abroad. In the spring pavilion, 16 tons of iron coins from the Song Dynasty unearthed in Jiaozhou are on display.
The cemetery part is located on the north side of the memorial hall. Gao Fenghan's tomb was relocated here, and the inscription on the tombstone was written by Zheng Banqiao. Surrounded by pine and cypress trees, it is solemn, elegant and refined. The statue of Gao Fenghan stands in the central part of the courtyard, with a contemplative and noble look, symbolizing purity and loyalty. There are also long corridors, eastern pavilions, square pavilions, rockeries and so on. Exotic flowers and plants, lush trees and bamboos are flourishing here, casting shade and looking charming and lovely, which are sufficient for visitors to enjoy themselves and have a rest. The unique charm remains here, showing the beauty passed down through the ages.
