Ma Hao Canal in Qingdao

The Ma Hao Canal, also known as the "Ma Jia Hao Canal", is the southern section of the South Jiaolai Canal. It connects to Jiaozhou Bay in the north and extends to the sea at Tangdao Bay in the south, with a total length of 14 li (about 7 kilometers), a width of 6 zhang (about 20 meters), and a depth of 3 zhang (about 10 meters). There are four villages along the banks of the Ma Hao Canal, namely Guanting, Haobeitou, Haowa, and Haonantou. In the Guanting Village, there are two ancient steles. One is the "Record of the Newly Opened Ma Hao in Jiaozhou", and the other is the "Stele of the River Repair Project". They were erected in the 17th year of the Jiajing reign period of the Ming Dynasty (1528).

The Ma Hao Canal is now a key cultural relics protection unit in Qingdao City. Its southern entrance is at Tangdao Bay, and its northern entrance is at Huangdao Qianwan, with a total length of 2.5 kilometers. The canal was dug in the Yuan Dynasty but without success. It was finally completed in the 16th year of the Jiajing reign period of the Ming Dynasty (1537), and it was an important waterway for ships coming from the south to enter Jiaozhou Bay from the Yellow Sea at that time.
