The construction of animal cages in Qingdao Zoo began in 1915, and it developed into a small zoo in the 1930s. It continued to grow and had reached a considerable scale by the early 1960s. In 1977, Qingdao Zoo was rebuilt on the southwestern side of Taiping Hill. After 10 years of construction, 18 distinctive animal houses and pavilions were gradually completed one after another, including the Ape and Monkey House, the Chimpanzee House, the Monkey Hill, the Aviary, the Songbird House, the Lion and Tiger Hill, and the Children's Petting Zoo. More than a hundred species and over a thousand animals are exhibited in the zoo.
